Plot 953 Alfred Dennis (1862-1928)

Alfred was born 1862/3 in Lambourne, Essex, the son of Thomas and Sarah Dennis. His father was an agricultural labourer.

In 1871 Alfred was the fourth of their six children and the family was living at old Maypole, Gravel Lane, Chigwell, Essex.

How or when Alfred made the move to Berkhamsted is not known but he was there by the time he married Emily Eliza Gristwood in 1895. Their twin sons James and Harry were born in April 1897 and baptised 27 April. Sadly baby Harry died aged only 6 weeks and was buried 24 May in an unmarked grave in this cemetery. The family were living in Ravens Lane at the time.

The 1901 census shows the family living at 164 High Street. Alfred was a grocer’s assistant which was still his occupation in 1911 when they were living at 7, Clarence Road. In 1921 they were living at 21, Charles Street. Alfred was still employed at the grocery.

Alfred and Emily suffered another loss when James, aged only 27, died 23 June 1924. He is buried here.

Alfred died 4 January 1928 at 21 Charles Street aged 65.
