Alfred has proved elusive to discover in the records.

According to the 1911 census he was born 1868 in Upper Holloway, London and the return states that in 1895 he married Marjorie, born in Scotland. They adopted Stephen William, their son, who was born 1906. At the time of the census they were living at 4a, Silver Street, Wellingborough and Alfred was a self-employed dealer in fancy goods for penny bazaars.

When he died 4 February 1926, aged 55, the burial register, and his probate record, give his address as 2, Romford Road Ilford.

He was buried here 9 February. It is not known what his association with Berkhamsted was.
