Alfred was born in Berkhamsted 29 January 1835, the oldest child of game keeper Matthew and Charlotte (née Rogers) Holliday. He was baptised in St Peter’s in April.
The 1841 census records the family in Friday Street, Northchurch “near Bottom Farm”. In addition to Alfred and his younger brother and sister, one of Charlotte’s sisters was living with them.
Ten years later Matthew was a labourer and the family lived in Castle Street. His younger brother had died the previous year at much the same time as another boy was born.
Alfred became a shovel maker and married Elizabeth Sarah Turner in Chobham, Surrey in 13 October 1856. It is not known what Alfred was doing in Surrey or how they met. Samuel Turner Holliday was born in 1856 in Chobham, Surrey and Deborah Ann in Berkhamsted in 1858.
In 1861 the family was living at 189, Ellesmere Road where Elizabeth Fanny was born that year.
By 1871 they had moved to The Wilderness. Young Samuel was an apprentice shovel maker and both girls were straw plaiters.
Elizabeth died in 1873, probably giving birth to George, and is buried in an unmarked grave in this cemetery.
In 1875 Alfred married Ruth Capel in Berkhamsted. They stayed in The Wilderness and Arthur Ernest was born 1876, Edwin in 1880 and Ellen in 1881, by which time Alfred was working as a labourer. Emily was born 1884, Charles in 1887 and Eliza in 1889.
By 1891 Alfred had returned to shovel making, but by 1901 he was a labourer for a timber merchant. The family was at 8, The Wilderness with Ernest, Charles and Eliza still at home.
Eliza died in 1906 aged only 18. She is buried in this cemetery.
In 1911 Alfred, Ruth and son Charles were living at 2, The Wilderness. Alfred was a pensioner and Charles a labourer.
Alfred died April 1917 at 21 Highfield Road.
