Plot 1054 Emily Alice Gudgin (née King) (1875-1949) 

Emily was born 10 September 1875 in Stewkley, Bucks, to Sarah and Ezra King. Her father was a smith and by 1881 the family had moved to the High Street in Northchurch. Emily had an older brother.

By the time Emily was fifteen they had moved to East’s Yard off Northchurch High Street. Her father was now a smith working for a coach builder and her brother Frederick was a coach body builder. Emily was a dressmaker.

In 1901 the census recorded Emily and her parents at 44, Gossoms End. Her father was working as a blacksmith and she was a “dressmaker’s machinist”.

Emily married Horace Thornton Gudgin, a railway clerk, in Northchurch 9 April 1911.

They were to have two children: Noel Bernard (1914) and Helen Marion (1917).

By 1921 the family had moved to 16, Cowper Road and at the time of the 1939 Register were living at 43, Kings Road

Emily died 26 September 1949 in West Herts hospital aged 74.

Horace married again in 1953 and died in 1970. He is buried here with Emily.
