Plot 474 Alice Hardern (née Dranfield) (1859-1941)

Alice was born 22 February 1859 in Wirksworth, Derbyshire. Her father was Francis Dranfield.

She married John Thomas Harden, a farm bailiff, on 18 November 1885 at St Mary’s, Wirksworth.

Their daughters Mary Lydia (1887) and  Alice B (1890) were both born in Berkswell, Derbyshire and in the 1891 census the family’s address was Beechwood, Berkswell, Meriden, Derbyshire.

They then moved to Berkhamsted where Frances Margaret was born in 1892. John was the farm manager for Haresfoot Farm. Son Roger was born in 1896.

During the First World War Roger served in the Royal Engineers Signals from 1915 to 1919. It must have been an anxious time, but he returned home safely having suffered one minor wound.

The 1921 census records the family still at Haresfoot Farm, Berkhamsted.

Alice died 20 November 1941 at Post Hill Cottage, Haresfoot, Bourne End, aged 82. John survived her until 1947 and they are buried here together.
