Alice Maud Mary Squibb
Plot 489 Alice Maud Mary Squibb (née Biddlecombe) (1868-1932)
Alice was born 25 December 1868 in Portsea, Portsmouth, and baptised 30 May the next year in St Mary’s, Portsea. Her mother was Mary Ann, her father James Biddlecombe was a mariner.
In 1871 her father was at sea and she was living with her mother and baby sister in the home of her widowed grandmother, Eliza Haysom, a publican, at 53, Britain Street, Portsea, very close to the docks.
James Biddlecombe died and Mary Ann married James Allan, a Scot, and petty officer on HMS Monarch, on 9 October 1874 in St Mary’s, Portsea. (HMS Monarch was an ironclad steam and sail warship and the first in the Navy to carry her guns in turrets.)
The 1881 census shows that James, only 36, was a “pensioner”, so presumably he had been invalided out of the Navy. Alice and her younger sister Emma were living with her mother and step-father and her three younger half-sisters at 28, North Street, Gosport.
Alice married Frank Squibb 4 April 1888 in Portsea parish church. The marriage certificate shows that he was a police constable resident in Droxford, a village about fifteen miles north of Portsmouth. Their daughter Alice Maud Mary was born in 1889 in Droxford.
In 1891 the family lived in the police station, West Street, Havant.
Frank Henry was born in 1896 but sadly died in 1900.
The 1901census shows that Frank was a general labourer – had he been dismissed from the police, or reigned? The family lived at 2, Kent Terrace, Southampton where they remained until at least June 1921 when Frank was employed as a dock labourer by the London & South West Railway Company.
It is not known when the couple moved to Berkhamsted where Frank died 30 January 1929
Alice died 3 July 1932 and is buried here with him.
