Biography:
Alice Noel Bailey
d. 08/07/1927

ALICE NOWELL BAILEY; 1890 – 1927

Alice was the first of eight children born to Arthur, a tailor, and Eliza Timson. She was born in the first quarter of 1890 and was baptised in Berkhamsted on 9th February 1890. We encounter her at the age of 1 living with her parents in Charles Street in Berkhamsted in the census record for 1891 and again at the age of 11 in 1901, by which time her younger siblings Arthur, Marjorie, Ada and Caroline had been born. The family had moved and was living at 149 High Street from where Arthur also ran his tailoring business.

A further 10 years on we discover Alice, now age 21 years, still living with her family at 149 High Street. The census records that she was working as a “cashier drapery.”  At 151 High Street, next door to the Timsons, Sarah Robinson lived and ran a draper’s shop, so it may be Alice worked as a cashier for Sarah Robinson.

In 1920, at the age of 30, Alice married one Thomas N Bailey. Although the marriage was celebrated in Berkhamsted, Thomas doesn’t seem to have come from the town and seven years later in 1927 when Alice died on 8th July 1927, her death was registered in Uxbridge. Her marriage was sadly short and there is no evident record that she had any children.

Alice’s body was returned to Berkhamsted where she was buried in Rectory Lane Cemetery with her sister Caroline and her father Arthur, who had died in 1904 and 1913 respectively.
