Alma Maskell(491)
Plot 491 Sarah Alma Maskell (née Clacy) (1854-1927)
Alma was born 12 December 1854 in Wokingham, Berkshire to Charles Clacy, bootmaker. Although registered as Sarah Alma, she appears to have always been known as Alma.
In 1871, aged 16, she was a kitchen maid at the Manor House, Barkham, Wokingham, Berkshire, one of seven domestic servants working for an elderly widow and her niece. It was there that she met William Maskell, aged 15, the footman.
Three years later Alma married William, who by that point had become a railway porter, in Reading, 17 November 1874.
The young couple moved about a great deal, doubtless because they had to go where William’s work sent him. Frederick, was born in 1876 in Hythe, Kent, followed by Lilian (1878 Dorking), then Ethelbert (1884), Evelyn (1885), Isabel (1887) and Gertrude (1890) all in London.
By 1891 the family were living in Station Road, Linslade, Beds, and William was a railway signalman and young Frederick, a porter.
Their last child, Leonard was born in 1894 in Aldbury, which probably means his father was employed at Tring station, which is in the parish.
By 1911 Alma and William were living at 61, Ellesmere Road, Berkhamsted
Alma died 29 August 1927, in Southbank Road, Berkhamsted.
