Amelia Starling
Plot 1108? Amelia Starling (née Barker) (1860-1943)
Amelia was born 26 April 1860 in Childrey, Berkshire, the second child of James and Eliza (née Patrick) Barker. Her father was a jockey.
In 1861 the family was living in Micklegate, York but by 1871 they lived at Station Road, Wood Ditton, Newmarket.
Amelia married Charles Martin Starling in Stradishall 8 February 1882. Charles had been born in Newmarket and was a jockey in the racing stables. He raced for the Joseph Dawson stable, then for Monsieur Edmund Blanc.
George was born November 1882 but sadly died in December of measles.
Jessie A was born 1884 followed by Laura Ellen (1885), Charles James (1887), William Thomas (1886) and Arthur Ralph (1889), all in Newmarket.
There was another double tragic loss in 1890 when William and Arthur died of measles.
In 1891 the family lived at Birds Alley, High Street, Newmarket where Dorothy E was born that year. Gertrude, was born in 1893 and the couple’s last child, Edith, in 1895.
In about 1900 Charles suffered a bad fall at the racecourse in Auteuil in France. This ended his racing career and he no longer appears with the family in census returns. His whereabouts until 1921 have not been established, but it is likely that he was in some form of hospital or nursing home.
In 1901 the family, without Charles, was living in Andrews Yard, Wellington Street, Newmarket. Amelia was a charwoman and Jessie a “day girl” – presumably a domestic servant. They had a stableman as a boarder.
In 1911 Amelia was living at 14, Ivy Terrace, Newmarket. She was still a charwoman and only Edith, a dressmaker’s apprentice, was at home.
In June 1921 Charles was a patient in St Audry’s Hospital for Mental Diseases in Woodbridge. It is not clear whether his accident caused some form of brain injury or whether this was a later affliction. Amelia was at 102, Shenley Street, Camberwell and had a male lodger.
25 May 1935 Charles died, aged 82, in Newmarket Infirmary.
In 1939 Amelia was living with her daughter Laura E Starling at 33, Charles Street, Berkhamsted.
She died in 1943 aged 83.
