Anne Elizabeth Orchard

Anne was born to Thomas and Emma Barnes in Berkhamsted. She was baptised at St Peters on 12 February 1860.  On the census records she is called Annie, so presumably that was the name she used.

In 1881 she was living with her parents at New Lodge Cottage (Bank mill), and working as a dressmaker. Her father was a coachman, like her husband.

She was 30 when she married John Orchard on 26 May 1890 at Bourne End St John’s. John was six years younger.  In about February 1891 their daughter Elsie was born. They were living in Ellesmere Road Berkhamsted at the 1891 census.

In 1901 they were living at Horseheath Lodge, Horseheath, Linton, Cambridgeshire, with children Elsie b 1891, Eleanor b 1894, John b. 1897 and Hilda b 1899. There was also Florence Orchard, aged 15, who is recorded as ‘daughter’ on the census, but she would have been born 4 years before Anne and John were married.

They had returned to Berkhamsted by 1911, when they were living at 6 Victoria Road.

Anne was living at 10 Victoria Road when she died in the presence of her daughter, of cardiac failure and ‘senility’ on 16 September 1938, aged 79. She was recorded as the ‘wife of a hotel coachman (retired)’.
