Biography:
Ann Horwood
1829 –1905

Unmarked grave Ann Horwood (née Daniels, late Horn) (1829-1905)

Ann was born 1829/30 in Berkhamsted or Frithsden.

She married George Thomas Horn in Berkhamsted in 1852.  Susan and Thirza were both baptised in 1853. Walter George was born in 1857.

The marriage was to be short and marked by sadness: George died in 1857 and Thirza in 1858, aged only 4.

In 1859 Ann married Benjamin Horwood a labourer, whose first wife, Sarah, had died in 1855 after they had had six daughters and one son together.

In 1861 the merged family were living in The Pightle (now Highfield Road). There were  Susan and Walter Horn; Benjamin’s daughter Sophia and son Charles by his first wife and Henry, his and Ann’s son, born in 1860.

Anderson was born in 1864 and Arthur E in 1868.

By 1871 they had moved to Red Lion Yard. 14 year old Walter, was a labourer like his step-father and had taken his surname.

Ten years later they were living in Cross Oak Road, which probably marked an improvement in their income.

In 1891 Ann and Benjamin were living alone in Cross Oak Road and Ann was a washer woman. Benjamin died late that year and in 1901 she was living at 21, Cross Oak Road with Joshua Daniels, a builder’s labourer, and his wife Martha, who was Benjamin’s daughter by his first marriage. Ann was still working as a laundress

She died December 1905 aged 75 at 21, Cross Oak Road.
