Anna Wilhelmina SCHLESINGER

Born 21st October 1860, died 31st October 1934

There is a possible baptism record for Anna in November 1860. Her parents are given as Hermann and Sophie SCHLESINGER and she was baptised in Augsburg, Bayern, Germany.

The first time we meet her in England is at the 1921 census where Anna is living alone, aged 60 years, 8 months. Her address is 22 Marlborough Road, Chiswick and the enumerator refers to her as “Miss Schlesinger”. Says she is single, born in Augsburg, Germany. She claims her status is a resident, as opposed to a visitor and  “home duties” as her occupation. She has no children.

One wonders why and when she came to England. What is clear is that she became a friend of the Cooper family, well known in Berkhamsted for the founding of Coopers Chemical Works and represented by the largest memorial in the cemetery.

Anna had no visible means of support, but she clearly had friends or relatives in America because in her 60s she started on several visits across the Atlantic in the liners of the day.

On 27th May 1922, aged 61, Anna left Liverpool as an “alien passenger” on White Star SS Regina bound for Montreal. On 6th June 1922 Anna arrived in Montreal. There she met the US Immigration authorities because her ultimate destination was Kansas. The US had an agreement with the steamship companies that they would treat all passengers bound for the US as if they were  landing at a US port of entry. The passengers were then issued with a ticket manifest to travel south on the Canadian railroad and allowed to enter the US without further inspection.  Anna confirms that she was born in Augsburg, Germany and is 61 years old. She describes herself as single with no occupation. Her closest contact in England is given as Mrs Marion COOPER of 23, Palmeria Court, Hove, Sussex. She says she has never been to the United States before and that her passage was paid by an unnamed friend. The friend she is visiting is Mrs David Spittal at The Eaton Hotel, Wichita, Kansas and she is expecting to stay for 6 months. Anna is only 5’ tall with a fair complexion, black hair and blue eyes and is passed as fit and well by the US Public Health Service.

Marion COOPER, a wealthy widow, was ten years older than Anna and had retired to Sussex to spend her last days beside the sea. She is buried in the COOPER plot in the cemetery.

A couple of years later Anna crossed the Atlantic again. She returned on 19th October 1924 to Liverpool as an “alien passenger” on board the White Star Line SS Regina from Montreal. She is described as a German citizen with a last permanent and future permanent residence in England. She is 65 years old with no occupation. Her proposed English address is her home in Chiswick, London.

A year later Anna was off again, this time to New York. On 21st November 1925, aged 65 she left Liverpool on SS Doric for New York. She was clearly very cultured because she claimed to speak English, French and Hebrew as well as German. Her permanent residence is given as Chiswick and her closest friend as Lady COOPER of Feldon Lodge, Boxmoor. Her destination is Savannah, Georgia, USA.

Lady COOPER is Alice Elizabeth COOPER, also buried in the cemetery.

In around 1926 Anna moved from Chiswick to live in Berkhamsted but soon set off on her travels again. Her fourth and last trip was again to Montreal. On 10th June 1928 Anna arrived back aboard SS Regina from Montreal to Liverpool, gave her address as 85 High Street, Berkhamsted, aged 67, no occupation, born in Germany, with a permanent home England.

At the time of Anna’s death her address was 81 High Street, on the corner of the High Street and Ravens Lane, although she died in London on 31st October 1934 at Bulstrode House, Bulstrode Street in Marylebone.

Her entry in the probate calendar shows that Administration was granted to Dame Alice Elizabeth COOPER (wife of Sir Richard Ashmole COOPER baronet) attorney of Heinrich SCHLESINGER. Her effects were worth £264 10s.
