Plot 925 Annie Gent (née Rance) (1878-1935)

Annie was born in 1878 in Berkhamsted, the daughter of Emma and James Rance. Her father was at various times a dealer, a carman and later a coal merchant.

In 1881 she was living with her family in Happy Valley, Potten End, the youngest of James and Emma’s seven daughters. Ten years later only she and two of her sisters were at home and her father was employed as a carman – a delivery driver using a horse-drawn vehicle.

Annie Married Henry William Gent, a third-generation canal boat builder, on 12 October 1902 in the parish church in Harrow, near where his mother had been born. Annie’s address was given as Court Farm Road, Sudbury – possibly she had been working there as a servant. Their only child Henry Thomas (Harry) was born 19 March 1903 in Berkhamsted.

In 1921 the couple were living at 5, Castle Street where Annie died  29 January 1935 aged 57.

Her son and husband are buried here with her. Her brother-in-law Walter George Gent is buried in plot 477 and her husband’s uncle, Arthur William Gent and his wife, in plot 528. Her parents-in-law, Henry Thomas and Martha Gent lie in plot 924.
