Biography:
Arthur Charge
1873 –1928

Unmarked grave Arthur Edwin Charge (1873-1928)

Arthur was born in 1873 in Paradise, Hemel Hempstead to John Charge, blacksmith and Eliza (née Allen). He was their second child and oldest son and he had four sisters and a brother.

In 1881 the family were living in Cotterells Road, Hemel Hempstead

Arthur married Emma Butterfield (born Piccots End) on 10 September 1898, at St Mary’s Hemel Hempstead.

In 1911 Arthur and Emma were living at 2, Mill Street, Berkhamsted. Arthur was working as a domestic gardener and they had two lodgers, both maids at Berkhamsted School. (From the location and the fact that Arthur’s funeral service was conducted by the chaplain of Berkhamsted School it seems likely that he was employed by the school.)

The couple had no children of their own, but adopted Margaret Jane Cobb (b 1918).

In 1921 they were living at Chalet Lodge, Shootersway and Arthur was out of work.

He died at 17, Swing Gate Lane in April 1928 aged 54 and was buried 18 April.
