Arthur was born 27 July 1885, Stafford to John and Sarah Jane (née Emery) Read and baptised in Stafford 28 August. His father was a shoe maker who had died by 1891 when Arthur, his mother and his older brother Harry were living with his widowed grandmother at 7, County Road, Stafford. His mother was a dressmaker.
In 1901 Sarah and her sons lived at 31, Gaol Road, Stafford. Arthur, aged 15, was a railway clerk, an occupation he was to follow for life, and Harry an engine fitter. Both were employed by the Midland Railway Company.
Ten years later Arthur and his mother had moved to 14, Belgrave Street, Derby
He married Elizabeth Warburton Grounds in Runcorn in September 1911. The Warrington Examiner for 16 September reported that “The marriage was solemnised at the historic Baptist Church at Hill Cliffe, on Monday, of Mr Arthur T Read, A.C.I.S., of Derby, and Miss E.W. Grounds, youngest daughter of Mr J. Grounds of Lower Walton.’
The couple moved to Derby where Elsie M (1914) and Arthur Douglas (1918) were born. In
1921 their address was 14, Belgrave Street, Derby.
By 1929 the family had moved to 21, Greenway West, Berkhamsted. As Arthur was still employed as a railway clerk the move was presumably in the course of his employment.
Sadly Arthur Douglas, aged just 11, died 4 June 1929. He is buried here.
The 1939 Register records Arthur and Elizabeth at “Munslow”, Hall Park Gate, Berkhamsted.
In 1954 Marion Jane, the daughter of Elsie and her husband Robert Cecil Christian, sadly died aged 5 months. She is buried here with Arthur Douglas and her grandparents.
Elizabeth died 4 October 1961 and Arthur survived her until 28 July 1972.
