Arthur and Mary Winfield

Plot 1058

"In loving memory Arthur Winfield died 26th November 1947 aged 73.

Mary Winfield died 26th February 1957 aged 81."

Arthur Winfield was born on 26 April 1874, and christened on 27 August 1874.

His parents were William Winfield and Lucy Winfield (plot X202) – his sister was Emma Hulls (X202). William was 50 and Lucy 42 when he was born.

William was a farm labourer, and in 1881 the family was living in the slum of Red Lion Yard.

In 1891, when he was 17, Arthur was living with his mother, brother and two boarders in Victoria Road, and working as an agricultural labourer.

In 1895, when he was 21, he married Mary.

In 1901 they were living in Highfield Road, with their two young children, and he was working as a coal porter.

In 1911 they were in 3 Back Lane, a four roomed house, with their son Frederick, daughter Elsie and a male lodger,

In 1921 Arthur had moved jobs again, now ‘housekeeper’ at the Co-op store in Cowper Road.  Frederick and Elsie, in their twenties, were still living at home, and both working in the mantle factory.

On the 1939 Register Arthur and Mary were still living in Back Lane, at no 5. Arthur was doing ‘light work at Co-op store’.

Despite being in low paid work throughout his life, Arthur left £490 18s 6d when he died.
