Verulam was born 28 May 1880, the son of James William Forward and Sophia (née Hinton) and was baptised 20 June at St Peter, Hoxton Square, Hackney. His parents lived at 109, Liverpool Buildings, Highbury and his father was described as a “loader”. Liverpool Buildings were six-storey blocks of “Improved Industrial Dwellings” on Highbury Station Road.
It has not proved possible to trace what became of James and Sophia and in 1891 Verulam was living with his uncle and aunt, George and Eliza Higgs, at 13, Cowper Road. George was a foreman in Cooper’s chemical works. He was still living with them in 1901 and, no doubt thanks to his uncle, was employed as a packer at the works.
Verulam married Kate Simmonds, who had been born in Wendover, in Tring in 1908.
At the time of the 1911 census the family were living at 9, Cross Oak Road and baby Arthur George had just been born. The census notes that they had lost one child in a still birth. Verulam was still a packer in the chemical factory.
Edith Maud was born in 1912 and Ronald James in 1914.
Kathleen Harriet was born in December 1918 but sadly died aged only 2 months in February 1919. She is buried in this cemetery.
The 1919 electoral register shows that the family was at 15, Gossoms End and, in 1920, at number 17 which was their address at the time of the 1921 census. Verulam was a packer at John Dickinson’s paper factory at Apsley Mills and Ronald, Edith, Arthur and Frank were all at home.
Frank William was born 30 October 1920.
In 1939 Verulam, and Kate and Frank William, who was in the Army, were all living at 17, Holly Drive. Verulam was “incapacitated”.
He died in July 1948 at Hempstead House, Hemel Hempstead.
