Bertram was born in 1891 in Berkhamsted and baptised 15 December 1897. His parents were Charles, an agricultural labourer, and Mary an upholsterer, Mead.
In 1911 he was living with his parents at 27, Victoria Road and working as a golfer’s caddy.
Later he became a labourer.
On 7 March 1917 Bertram joined the Army Labour Corps.
His records show that he was just over 6’ 1” but only weighed just over 8 stone. “He says he suffers from chronic indigestion which accounts for his thinness.”
Bertram was discharged “physically unfit for service” due to a stomach ulcer 31 September 1917 from hospital in Cambridge.
He married Annie Hunt in 1921 and that year they were at 27, Victoria Road living with his parents. On the census he is described as, “Disabled soldier”.
Victor Dennis Mead was born 1926.
Bertram died at West Herts hospital in September 1935 aged 44.
His parents and his grandfather are all buried in this cemetery.
