Charles Dealey

Unmarked grave Charles Dealey (1845-1906)
Charles was born in 1845 in Northchurch. His father Jesse was a labourer, born in Eton Bray, his mother was Elizabeth (née Cheney). He had three older brothers and a younger sister and in 1851 the family were living in Castle Street.
By 1861 the Dealeys were back in Northchurch. Jesse was working as a gardener and 16 year old Charles, an apprentice wheelwright, was the second oldest child still at home – his older brother James was a boatman and four more boys had been added to the family.
By the time of the 1871 census things had become hard for the family who were living at Canal Side. Jesse had died, Charles and his younger brother Jesse, both labourers, were out of work, although another brother, Joseph, was still employed. Elizabeth and her daughter were straw plaiters and the three youngest, all boys, were at plait school.
Charles never married.
It has not been possible to trace him between the 1871 and 1901 censuses but in 1901, aged 56, he was in the Union Workhouse
He died there in April 1909 aged 64 and was buried by the parish 28 April.
His brother Joseph (died 1916) is buried in this cemetery in an unmarked grave.
