Charles Edward Groom (857)
Plot 857 Charles Edward Groom (1861-1940)
Charles was born 15 June 1861 in Great Gaddesden, the son of William and Catherine Groom. His father was an agricultural labourer and his mother a straw plaiter, both born in the village.
By the time Charles was nine he, and his two older sisters, was a straw plaiter like their mother. This was a common occupation for the women and children of labouring families, producing plait for the hat industries of Luton and Bedford.
Charles became a shepherd and married Emily Maria Collier from Great Gaddesden in the parish church 14 April 1884.
The 1891 census records Charles and Emily living at number 12, Little Gaddesden. He was still a shepherd and they had three children – Edward (1886), Sarah (1887) and Reginald (1890).
Violet was born in 1895. (The 1911 census reveals that another child had been born but died in infancy.) By 1901 Charles was employed as a horseman at Hudnall Farm in Little Gaddesden. Edward was a general labourer and Sarah was working as a domestic servant.
In 1911 only Violet was living at home at number 2, Hudnall, and Charles was an agricultural labourer. Charles and Emily were still at the same address and he was working for farmer Edward Hoar ten years later. None of the children were at home, but they had a male lodger.
Emily died in 1928 and by 1939 Charles was living at 108, Gossoms End with family of his daughter Violet Wheelton and her husband Ernest. He was described as a retired farm carter.
Charles died 30 January 1940 aged 78 at the Wheelton’s home.
