Unmarked grave Charles James Holliman (1868-1938)

Charles was born in 1868 in Notting Hill, London. His father was Frederick Holliman, a groom and late cab driver and his mother Ellen (née Green) was born in Berkhamsted.

The dynamics of his parents’ marriage are hard to decipher. All three of their sons were born in London but were baptised in Berkhamsted and Ellen was living in Berkhamsted with her parents and sons while still recorded on the census as married.

Charles was baptised on 8 March 1868 in Berkhamsted although his parents’ residence is shown as London.

In 1871 Ellen and sons Frederick (born in Kentish Town), Charles (born Notting Hill) and Henry (born Kentish Town) were living in the same house as her parents in Castle Street. She was working as a charwoman.

His father died before April 1881 when the census shows him living with his widowed mother and brothers Frederick (labourer in chemical works) and Henry.

Charles became a carpenter. At the age of 21 and after 7 years as a carpenter he joined a trade union, the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners. (He was excluded from the union in 1914 as his dues were in arrears.)

Records of the Berkhamsted Lodge of Freemasons show that he was initiated into the Freemasons in 1904 and was a carpenter living in the High Street

In 1911 and until at least 1928 he was a boarder at New Lodge Cottages, Northchurch

Charles died in January 1938 at 16, Curtis Way aged 70.

His brother Frederick William who died in 1899 is also buried in this cemetery.
