Charles Rance
1856 –1927

Unmarked Grave Charles Rance (1856-1927)

Charles was born in 1856 in Berkhamsted to Henry and Mary Ann Rance. His father was an agricultural labourer and the family lived in Bedfords Cottages, Berkhamsted Common.

Charles married Mary Chennells in 1877 in Great Gaddesden.

Sarah was born in 1878 and Annie the next year.

By 1881 Charles was a painter’s labourer and the family was living in Bridge Street.

Ellen was born in 1881 followed by Ada (1883), Harry (1885), William (1887), Lily (1889) and Bert (1891).

In 1891 Charles was a bricklayer’s labourer and the family lived in Kitsbury Road.

 Frank was born in 1892, then Amy (1895), Alice (1897) and Horace (1899).

In 1901 Charles and Mary lived at 1, Kitsbury Road with nine of their children. He was a general labourer.

Mary died in May 1901 at Kitsbury Road, aged 43 and is buried in this cemetery.

In 1907 Charles married Daisy Annie Wilmore, 23 years his junior. The 1911 found them still at 1, Kitsbury Road with seven of the children. Charles was a house painter.

In 1917 daughter Alice died and is buried here with him.

In 1921 Charles was employed as a painter by Osborn’s, Builders and living at “Glenhurst”, 1, Queens Street, with Daisy, sons Horace and Bert, and Bert’s wife Ethel.

Charles died in August 1927 aged 71 at “Glenhurst”.

His brother Edwin (1850-1898) is also buried in this cemetery.
