Biography:
Charles Tripp
1854 –1913

Unmarked grave Charles Tripp (1854-1913)

Charles was born in 1854 in Ringshall. His father was Joseph Tripp, a shepherd, his mother Sarah was a straw plaiter. In 1861 Charles had two older and two younger brothers.

Charles has not yet been traced between April 1861 and 1891, but it is likely that he entered domestic service and worked his way up through the ranks of footmen, as on 5 April 1891 he was recorded as butler to widow Mrs Helen Dennison and her adult unmarried daughter at Marian Lodge, Lambsey Lane, Little Gaddesden. Besides Charles the staff consisted of a cook/housekeeper, two lady’s maids, a housemaid and under-housemaid and a kitchen maid. Oddly, given that there were no children in the household, there was also a governess.

Charles married Ann Wibden on 12 November 1891 in Little Gaddesden parish church. She was the daughter of a game keeper in Little Gaddesden. They were to have no children.

In 1901 Charles and Ann were living at 45, George Street, Northchurch. He is recorded in the census as a domestic servant, but there is no indication of his employer.

In 1911 his occupation was given as “Waiter” but he was an invalid. He and Ann lived at 6, Charles Street.

Charles died May 1913 aged 59 at 6, Chesham Road. Ann died in April 1914. It is likely that she is buried here with Charles.
