Charles was born 11 December 1873 in Heap, Heywood, Lancs, to William Todd, a cotton mill manager, later commercial traveller, and his wife Ann (née Bottomley).
In 1891 Charles was living with his family in Heap and was employed as a mackintosh maker. His older brother was employed as an asbestos warehouseman
In 1895 at All Saints, Walworth, Charles married Alice Ann Grandfield. His residence at the time was Amsterdam and his occupation was given as commercial traveller.
Mabel Alice was born in 1896 in the Netherlands, followed by Ellen Eva (Nelly) (1898 Walworth), John (Jack) William Grandfield (1899 Walworth), Amy (1900 Netherlands) and Alice (1905 Netherlands).
Daughter Mabel Alice died in 1905.
In 1911 the family lived at “Netherland”, Holly Park Gardens, Church End, Finchley with the children and his sister-in-law Blanche. They employed a housemaid and a cook.
Charles had joined the United Grand Lodge of Freemasons by 1912.
In 1922 when daughter Ellen Eva married his occupation was given as “merchant”
In 1932 son John married a Dutch bride in Hilversum, Netherlands
The 1939 Register recorded Charles as an asbestos merchant living at 24, Brampton Grove, Hendon.
Alice died in 1940 in West Herts hospital and is buried here..
Charles died 1 July 1941 at Camberwell House hospital, Peckham Road, London aged 67. He left £6463 (about £284,000 in 2025).
