Biography:
Charlotte Oakley
1870 –1926

Charlotte Oakley (née Cato, late Bone)

Charlotte was born in 1870 in Marsworth, Bucks, the oldest child of George and Ann Cato. Her father was an agricultural labourer. In 1881 she was a straw plaiter, a common occupation for the women and children of labouring families, making plait for the Luton and Dunstable hat industries.

She married Arthur Bone in 1893 and Sarah Alice (1894), Hannah (1897) and Ada (1898) were all born in Wilstone.

By the time of the 1901 census Sarah was widowed and living at Wilstone Green with the three girls. She worked as a straw plaiter.

Daughter Lucy was born in 1904 in Berkhamsted and registered as Bone. The identity of her father is unknown. Young Ada died in 1905.

Charlotte married William Oakley, a farm labourer in 1906. It is possible that he was Lucy’s father.

In 1911 the family was living at King’s Road with Mary Keen, an 87 year old widow and daughters Hannah & Lucy.

Charlotte died in the Union infirmary in July1926 aged 56. Her daughter Sarah Alice Howard is buried here with her.
