Biography:
Clara Hildyard
1862 –29/06/1930

Unmarked grave Clara Christina Hildyard (née Salveson) (1862-1930)

Clara was born in 1862 in Poplar, London, the daughter of Robert Henry and Mary Ann Salveson. Her father was an oilman, the son of Salve Salveson, a Norwegian ship builder, and a mother born in Poplar.

She was baptised in September 1866 along with her younger brother Salve Henry at St Michael and All Saints, Bromley. At the time the family were living at Grays Inn Road, London.

In 1891 Clara was housekeeper for the Muggleton family in Penge. The household consisted of William Muggleton, a type founder, his wife, mother-in-law and two children. There was also a domestic servant employed.

Clara married James Wilton Hildyard, a widower and bookmaker’s clerk, in 1909 in Lewisham. She was 47, he was 57. In 1911 they were living at 17, Ermine Road, Lewisham.

Ten years later they were still at the same address. James gave his occupation as “Government clerk (out of work.)”

James died in 1923 in Lewisham. It is not known when Clara moved to Berkhamsted, but at the time of her death she was living at 27, Greenway. However, she died in the Union Workhouse in 29 June 1930 aged 68. She was probably admitted to its infirmary for free medical care, rather than being an inmate of any kind as her estate was £253. Probate was granted to Salve Henry Salveson, her brother, a labourer.
