Unmarked grave Clara Rance (née Bates, late Horwood) (1863-1908)
Clara was born in 1863 in Tring. In 1881 she was living with her widowed mother Elizabeth and older sisters Emma and Eliza in Marsworth. All the women were straw plaiters.
Clara had two children out of wedlock: Annie (1882) and Ernest Alfred (1885) both born in Tring. Their father is unknown.
On 2 September 1888 Clara married Charles Mark Horwood in Berkhamsted. He had previously cancelled a marriage in Berkhamsted in 1871 after the banns had been called twice and had joined the Army. Charles died in January 1890 in Cross Oak Road. He was 39 years old.
In 1891 Clara married labourer Frederick Rance in Berkhamsted and in 1901 they were living at 23, Mill Street with Annie and Ernest Alfred Bates.
Clara died in January 1908 at 44, Castle Street, aged 46.
The 1911 census shows Frederick and Ernest, now known as Ernest Rance, still at 44, Castle Street.
