Biography:
Clara Ward
1862 –1920

Unmarked grave Clara Ward (née Plummer, late Young) (1862-1920)

Clara was born in 1862 in Hemel Hempstead, the daughter of George and Eliza Plummer. Her father was a farm labourer born in Great Gaddesden and in 1871 they lived Piccotts End, Hemel Hempstead. Clara had an older and younger sister and two older and two younger brothers. Two of the boys, aged 10 and 13 were working as “farm boys” and Clara was a “straw plaiter and scholar”.

By 1881 the family had moved to Caitlin Street, Hemel. Clara was the oldest living at home and she was still a straw plaiter. Three boys and three other girls were also at home, the youngest just one year old. With only two of the girls plaiting, and George and his 16 year old son working as general labourers, money must have been very tight.

Clara married Archibald Young, a painter and decorator, in Hemel in 1884.

Herbert was born in 1885 followed by Beatrice (1887), Violet (1889) and Robert (1892).

In  the family 1891 were living in Cottrells and in 1901 at 12, Hammerfield, Hemel Hempstead. Herbert was employed at a saw mill and Beatrice was a boot and shoe machinist.

Archibald died in 1905 aged just 39.

Clara married Walter Henry Ward in 1906. He was 10 years her junior.

In 1911 they were living at 22, Highfield Road, Berkhamsted. Walter was a general carter and Robert was employed at Coopers chemical works. Also living with them were Walter’s 7 year old grandson and a boarder.

Clara died in September 1920, aged 57.
