DAVID COOK; 1860-1886
David was born in Frithsden Berkhamsted to Mary Cook in July 1860 and was christened on 7th October 1860. At the time the census of 1871 was taken his mother, then only 27 years old, was already a widow and worked as a straw plaiter. David had two siblings, an older brother, Thomas born c.1858, and a younger brother, Alfred, born c.1862.
By 1871 the family was living in Red Lion Yard, Berkhamsted, a notoriously poor part of the town. David’s mother is noted as unmarried. David, then 13 years old was working as a general labourer.
David married Sarah Wilson in July 1880 and in 1881 he and Sarah were living with Sarah’s family in Canal Side Berkhamsted. Sarah’s mother, also a widow, worked as a charwoman and had four other children in addition to Sarah. David and Sarah had a daughter of their own, Rose, who was born in 1880. David who continued to work as a labourer died only 6 years later 23 January 1886. He was only 26 years old.
