Plot 359 Dorothea Augusta Benson (née Willoughby ) (1871-1919)

Dorothea was born at 2, Marquess Road, Islington in 1870 and baptised on 24th August at St Paul’s, Islington. She was the daughter of Edward Francis Willoughby, a surgeon, and his wife Augusta Ann (née Wright).

The family were still living in Marquess Road ten years later and the census record shows that Dorothea had an elder brother, Percival, a younger brother Edward and two younger sisters, Ethel and Leila. The family employed a live-in cook and housemaid.

By April 1891 the Willoughby’s were resident at Bratton Lodge, Green Lanes, Hornsey. Dorothea, aged twenty, is recorded as a scholar, although of what it is impossible to tell. She certainly gave no occupation when she married William Lockwood Maydwell Benson, a solicitor, on the 24th August 1898 at Stoke Newington parish church.

The couple were living at 286, Park Road, Hornsey when sons Willoughby Lockwood (b. 1900) and Hugh Gilpin (b.1901) were born. Dorothea employed a youthful mother’s help and domestic servant as live-in staff.

Edward Geoffrey (1902), Dorothy Etta (1903), Robert Bernard (1905) and Ethel Margaret (1906) were all born in Hornsea, but by 1908 when John Percival arrived they were in Berkhamsted and by 1910 living in Boldre House, Charles Street.

In the 1911 census Dorothea was employing a sick nurse, a ‘lady domestic help’ and a ‘domestic servant.’

Dorothea died 11 September 1919 aged only forty eight, possibly a victim of the Spanish flu epidemic. William survived her by over twenty years. He passed away in 1940 and is buried with her here.
