Unmarked grave Edith Clara Stebbings (née Light) (1884-1941)

Edith was born in 1884, in the tough Limehouse district of East London to Clara and Edwin Light.

In 1901 she was living with her parents at 414, Commercial Road, Mile End Old Town, London. Her father was a beer retailer, which is probably how she met publican Robert Stebbings whom she married 29 March 1909 at St Andrew’s, Romford.

Her father had died by then  and she was given away by Mr George Burrows. Edith wore a cream dress with a veil and a circlet of orange blossom with a shower bouquet of lily of the valley and white roses and carnations. Wedding presents included a silver cruet from the officers of the Romford Workhouse, a silver mounted biscuit box and jam pot from the New Mill Slate Club and a silver mounted butter dish from the Prince Albert Social Club. The honeymoon was in Brighton.

Their only child, Eric Robert was born in 1910 in Berkhamsted and the 1911 census shows them living at the Goat Inn, High Street, where Robert was the publican. Her widowed mother with them.

Edith died in December 1941 at The Goat Inn, aged 58. Robert remained landlord of the Goat until 1954.
