Edith was born 31 July 1881 in St Osyth, Essex, the second child of George Maurice and Margaret Thamar (née Kidby) Bradbook’s family of eight.

Her father was a farm bailiff and in 1891 the family was living in Mistley, a village on the southern bank of the River Stour.

By the age of 19 in 1901 Edith was a cook for the Vicar of Mistley, his wife and two young children. There was also a live-in nurse and housemaid.

In April 1911 Edith was cook to the Kingsley family in Brickenden, a small village about four miles south of Hertford. The couple and their adult daughter also employed a lady’s maid, a parlour maid and a housemaid.

Later that year married William James Hing, a chauffeur, in the Hatfield registration district.

Margaret Joyce  was born in 1913 and Frederick James in 1918, both Boxmoor.

William enlisted on 18 May 1915 and served as a private in France and Belgium in the Army Service Corps, Mechanical Transport section. He was discharged 28 February 1919 to 9c, Puller Road, Boxmoor, apparently unscathed.

In the 1930s the family lived at 59, Cross Oak Road but by 1939 had moved to 39, Victoria Road by1939.
