Edward was born 28 March 1866 in Newington, Surrey, to Thomas and Sarah Collins and baptised the next day at the church of St Peter and Paul, Dagenham. His father was a clerk who died before 1881.
At the age of 15 Edward was living with his mother, brother and several lodgers in Clerkenwell and was working as an account book maker.
He was still there, at 7, Albion Place aged 25 in 1891 by which time he was working as a post office sorter. His mother was still keeping a boarding house and nothing appears to have changed by the time of the 1901 census.
Edward married widow Harriet Ann Puttick (née Humphrey) in 1908 in Islington. Her first husband had died the previous year.
In 1911 they were living at Highbury Hill, Islington with Jocelyn Puttick, Harriet’s son.
Edward was a freemason from 1913.
The 1921 census records Edward, Harriet and Jocelyn at 47, Radnor Road, Pinner. Edward was still a Post office employee.
At time of his death Edward was living at 6, Torrington Road, the home of the Puttick family where he and Harriet had been residing since at least 1939.
He died in Hemel Hempstead hospital 12 March 1945 a few days from his 80th birthday.
