Biography:
Eliza Potton
11/06/1826 –1880

Unmarked grave Eliza Potton (née Wells) (1826-1880)

Eliza was born 11 June 1826 in Ivinghoe to labourer John Wells and his wife Sarah.

It has not proved possible to trace her life from then until her appearance on the 1861 census, by which point she had married wood turner James Potton (or was passing as his wife). He had married Mary Ann Winter in 1851 and their son James was born in 1853 in Berkhamsted. Mary Ann died in 1854.

The marriage of Eliza to James has not been found, but their son John was born in 1859 in Lambeth and her maiden name of Wells is given in the record. It is possible that no marriage had taken place. They then returned to Berkhamsted where George (1863) and Eliza (1868) were born and John was baptised.

In 1861 the family were living in Thompson’s Row in Holliday Street and were still there in 1871. Eliza’s stepson James was noted on the 1871 census return as a “cripple.”

Eliza died in October 1880 aged 55.

Her son John (died 1911) is also buried in this cemetery.
