Plot 498: Elizabeth Bonner (1870-1926)

Elizabeth was born in 1870 in Westoning, Bedfordshire, the daughter and eighth child of Mathew Bonner, a shepherd and his wife Ann (née Parkins).

Perhaps because of the size of the family, in 1881 Elizabeth and her older sister Emily were living with their widowed maternal grandmother, a pauper, in Westoning.

In 1891 Elizabeth was working as live-in cook for James Chambers and his wife at the L&C Bank in the High Street where James was bank manager. There were no children and the Chambers also employed a housemaid.

By the time of the 1901 census Mrs Chambers had been widowed and was living with her widowed mother at 110, High Street. Elizabeth was their only live-in domestic servant.

Ten years later Mrs Chambers was living alone with Elizabeth and in 1921 they were still at 110, High Street.

Elizabeth never married. She died 21 September 1926 at West Herts Hospital, Hemel Hempstead aged fifty six.
