Elizabeth was born 20 June 1867 at Ballinger Common, near Great Missenden, Bucks, the second child of Reuben and Mary Ann Clack. Her father was an agricultural labourer and her mother a straw plaiter. By the time Lizzie was 13 she too was a plaiter which must have been welcome additional income – the family now had six children, of whom only Lizzie was earning, and her mother had a new baby.
Lizzie married Henry Dilling, born in Devon, in 1893 in Amersham. Their daughter Dorothy was born that year in Great Missenden but they then moved to Chelsea which saw the births and early deaths of two daughters Lilian Grace (1895-6) and Constance (1896-1902).
In 1901 they were living at 3, Roskell Terrace, Putney and Henry was a “dairy manager”.
Violet Alma was born in 1902, in Romford, Essex and by 1911 the family lived at 32, East Street Buildings, Marylebone. Henry worked as a milkman.
The 1921 census records them at 17, New Chesterfield Street, London W1. Henry was employed as a milkman by the Devonshire Dairy Company in Marylebone, Dorothy was a confectioner’s assistant at upmarket shop Richoux in Baker Street and Violet Alma was a ledgers clerk at Harrods.
Violet married Archibald Barnister in 1926 and in 1939 Elizabeth, now widowed and described as an old age pensioner, was living in their household at 13, Hillside, Berkhamsted.
Elizabeth died in Hemel Hempstead in late 1944 aged 77.
