Biography:
Elizabeth Gibson
1878 –1937

Unmarked grave Elizabeth Gibson (née Bruton) (1878-1937)

Elizabeth was born in 1878 at Whelpley Hill, Chesham, the third daughter and fourth child of  John Bruton an agricultural labourer, and Caroline (née Redding).

Like many daughters of labourer’s families, Elizabeth went into service and in 1901 was a general domestic servant in the home of a widow and her family in Lambeth.

She married William Gibson, a nurseryman born in Thame, in 1904 in Berkhamsted. William’s family had settled in the town and in 1911 he and Elizabeth were living at 32, Victoria Road with Alice Lilian (1906) and Geoffrey William John (1909).

After the outbreak of the First World War William joined the Royal Fusiliers as a Private. Their daughter Barbara was born in 1916.

Tragically, on 23 March 1918, William was killed in action. He has no known grave, but is commemorated on the Arras memorial in France and on Berkhamsted’s war memorial.

In 1921 Elizabeth, who never remarried, was living at 24, Charles Street with Lucy, who was a nursemaid. Geoffrey and Barbara were at school.

Elizabeth died at 51, Castle Street in March 1937, aged 59.

Her parents-in-law Robert and Ellen Gibson are buried in plot 756.
