Plot 1112 Ellen Annie Gascoigne (1862-1942)

Ellen grew up in a large family and in a devout  Church of England household. Her father and her paternal grandfather were Anglican clergymen and three of her brothers were also ordained.

Ellen was born 15 January 1862 in Bristol, the daughter of Thomas and Charlotte Gascoigne. Her father was an Anglican clergyman, but never seems to have had a parish, instead educating boys in his own home. She was the tenth of their eleven children – six boys and five girls. She never married and was financially independent.

In 1871 Ellen was with her family in Church Street, Spondon, a village that is now almost a suburb of Derby. On census night her father was staying at the Charing Cross hotel in London, but her mother and seven of the children were at home, along with another little girl described as “Pupil” – perhaps being tutored. The family employed a cook, a kitchen maid, two housemaids, a parlour maid, a nursemaid and a “boy”.

In 1881 she was living with her parents at 105, Pembroke Road, Clifton, Bristol, a very handsome Victorian villa. At home was her brother Frederick and her sisters Alice and Katherine. Her father, now 67, was described as being a “clergyman without cure of souls” –  in other words he had no parish. Frederick was a tutor and three boys aged 9 to 11 were boarding with them and described as scholars – presumably being educated by Frederick. A cook, a parlour maid and a housemaid lived-in.

Ellen’s father died in 1883 and her mother five years later. In 1901 she was living with her unmarried brother, the Revd. Frederick Goscoigne, at the Vicarage in the parish of Martin Hussingtree, a village lying between Droitwich and Worcester. Also living with them was their unmarried sister Charlotte. Both women were of “independent means” and the household employed a butler and cook.

By 1921 Ellen had returned to Spondon, living as a lodger in the home of John and Florence Brocklehurst.

At some point she moved to Berkhamsted and in the 1939 Register is recorded as one of two residents in a guest house at 45, Charles Street.

Ellen died 29 January 1942 at The Grange Nursing Home, Shrublands Road, Berkhamsted.
