Ellen was born 6 February 1884 in Romford, Essex, the daughter of Irish-born Thomas McDonagh, a labourer, and his wife Sarah, born in Romford.
The 1891 census recorded the family living in St George in the East in what is now Tower Hamlets.
25 September 1910 in the church of St George in the East, she married Harry James Green, a contractor born in Ramsden, Essex. By then her father was described as a “horse keeper.”
1911 the couple were living at “Lynton”, Chelmsford road, Wickford, Essex. Harry was a coal dealer. Their son Arnold was born later that year and Harry Vernon in 1914.
In 1921 the family were still living in Wickford and Harry was a coal dealer, operating from home and employing workers.
Harry died at some point between then and 1939 when widowed Ellen was living at 245, High Street with Alice Kemp, another widow.
Ellen died 24 January 1953 aged 69.
