Ellen Mitchell
Ellen (nee Jasper) Mitchell; 1868 – 1960 [534]
Ellen Mitchell is buried with the husband in plot 534 at Rectory Lane Cemetery. She was born in Q1,1868 in Altarnum, Cornwall and was baptised on 17 September 1867 in the parish church at Altarnum, that same year. Ellen was the 6th of 7 children born to Richard (Rick Mutton) and Grace (nee Burnard) Jasper. Richard and Grace married on 14 November 1850. Ellen’s father was a farmer of 68 acres. Both parents continued to reside in Cornwall. Ellen’s mother Grace died in 1898 aged 66. Ellen’s father Richard is detailed on the census of 1901. He was then 74 and living with his son and a housekeeper. He died 4 years later aged 78.
Ellen married Frederick Mitchell in Q4 1889 aged 21. Two years later in 1891, the census shows Ellen and Frederick living in Trewen, Cornwall. Caroline, Frederick’s mother was living with them having been widowed in 1887. Her death was registered in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. She is buried in Rectory Road cemetery.
This implies Frederick, Ellen and Caroline moved to Berkhamsted between 1891 and 1901. There is no documentation that enables us to be more precise about the moving date. Their address was 19 High Street, Berkhamsted and by now they had two children, Edith and Louisa. Ellen was working as a dairy maid in Berkhamsted but we do not know where she worked. Frederick, her husband is listed as a ‘cowman on farm’. Did they work on the same farm?
Ellen’s husband, Frederick died in 1907, aged 46. We do not know the cause of his death leaving Ellen to look after their 2 children, now aged 14 and 12. By 1911, the census shows us that Edith, 18 was working as a cashier and Louisa was a ‘Daily Help’.
By 1939, Ellen, Edith and Louisa were living at 12 High Street. Edith continued to work as a cashier (at a drapery store) whilst Louisa worked as a senior invoicing clerk.
Ellen died in 1960, aged 92 - 53 years after the death of her husband in 1907.
There is not sufficient documentation to be absolutely sure, but records show that an ‘Edith Mitchell’ born ‘abt 1892’ had her death registered in St Albans in 1966. She would have been 74. Louisa, born 17 February 1895 died aged 77. Her death was registered in Hemel Hempstead.
