Elise was the fourth child of eleven born to Frederick Hale and his second wife Mary (née Hammond). Frederick was a draper who was born in Holborn, London but who moved to Berkhamsted by 1851.

Elsie was born 4 October 1868. Her parents had lost their three other daughters in infancy and, tragically, Elsie died 25 July 1869.

Happily four sons and three daughters survived infancy, although one child, Lucy Rosa, died aged nine.

Her father and his first wife Eliza lie in plot 116.
