Emily Costin

Plot 680 Emily Costin (née Bedford) (1839-1913)

Emily was born in Gossoms End, Northchurch 26 January 1839 to Joanna and Jonas Bedford and was baptised 6 October that year. She had two older brothers and an older sister and her father was a gardener. By 1851 two further daughters had been born to the family which was still in Gossoms End.

Emily left home to work as a domestic servant and in 1861 the census recorded her at Bourne End Lodge in Bovingdon, one of two housemaids employed by the Case family. Mr Case was a coal merchant.

In November 1869 she married William Edmund Costin, a boat builder, in Hemel Hempstead and their married life is described here in his entry. The couple were to have no children.

William died in September 1910 and was buried here.

In 1911 Emily was living at 4, Station Road with her unmarried niece Sarah Costin.

Emily died at home on 31 July 1913 aged 74 and was buried here with William.
