Emily Jane Brooks (488)
Plot 488 Emily Jane Brooks (née May) (1856-1931)
Emily was born in 1856 in Southsea, Hampshire, the daughter of William Brooks, a coachman, and Fanny.
The family moved very shortly after her birth to Barn Green, Hambledon, her father’s home village, where her two brothers and four sisters were born.
Emily married William Brooks, a coach smith from Northchurch in 1880 in Berkhamsted. How they met is unknown, but her father’s profession may have brought him into contact with William, perhaps at the Pethybridge coach works where William was employed.
The couple were to have six children, although sadly only three survived beyond infancy: Alice (1882-1972), Annie (1883-4), Fred (1887-1963), May (1889-90), Mabel (1891-2) and Harry (b.1894)
By 1891 the couple had moved to 51, Kittsbury Road, a five-roomed house, and remained there for the rest of their lives. In 1911 daughter Alice was a draper’s assistant, son Fred was a coach painter and Harry was a grocer’s apprentice.
Emily died 13 November 1931 aged 75. William survived her until 1937 and was buried here with her.
