EMILY MARIA GATES: 1841 - 1911

Emily Maria Gates, née Cook, was born 12th July 1841 in Kent to William and Mary Ann Cook, née Hodges. She was christened 2nd August 1841. She had 12 siblings: Mary Ann, 1843-1913; Ellen Ann, 1845-1929; Phoebe Sarah, 1848-1908; William Edward, 1850-1883; Alice Elizabeth, who only lived four years, 1852-1856; George Frederick, 1854-1937; Ann Maria, 1856-1931; Henry Arthur, 1858-1934; Edwin John (another child death), 1860-1864; Alice Amelia, 1863-1931; Elizabeth Jane, 1864-1897; Albert Edwin Edward, 1866-1939.

She married William Gates after their third child was born in January 1867 in Blean, Canterbury.

Emily and William had seven children. William had a number of different jobs, mostly labouring. In the 1880’s she had to live with family whilst her husband was in a workhouse and after this the family moved first to Water Lane and then to Thompsons Row near Holliday Street, Berkhamsted. Her husband, William Gates died in 1902 and Emily lived in Sayer’s Alms Houses on the High Street Berkhamsted where she died October 11th 1911. She was buried, like her husband in Rectory Lane Cemetery.
