Plot 891 Emily Newton (née Stops) (1857-1935)

Emily was born in 1857 in Hammersmith, London, to William and Mary Stops. Her father was a veterinary surgeon and they lived at 5, Clifton Road, Hammersmith. In 1871 she had an older brother and five younger brothers and a younger sister, Mary Elizabeth.

In 1881, aged 23, she was employed as housekeeper to her uncle Sidney Stops who was the licensee of The Pakenham, 1, Knightsbridge Gardens on the corner of Knightsbridge Green and Raphael Street. Originally a country house, it was turned into a hotel and pub in 1847 and eventually demolished in 1950. Also living there was her brother William who was the manager; a barman; bar maid; pot boy; waiter, cook and housemaid.

Emily married Daniel Newton, a market gardener born in Bucks on 5 October 1891 in Hammersmith.

Alfred (1886) and Sidney (1894) were both born in Twickenham; Dorothy Emily Mary (1896) in Harlesden, Middlesex.

In 1901 they were at Butts Villas, Hanworth, Staines, Middlesex. Living with them was her widowed sister, Mary Way.

Daniel died in 1905 and by 1911 Emily had moved to 9, Middle Row, Berkhamsted.

In 1921 she was living with her daughter Dorothy Seabrook at 55, Kitsbury Road and her sister Mary Way had moved to Berkhamsted. Mary died in 1933 and is buried here.

Emily died 19 April 1935 at 6, Shrublands Road, aged 77.
