Biography:
Emma Davis

Emma Davis

Unmarked grave Emma B Davis (née Pooley) (1841-1901)
Emma was born in 1841 in High Street, Northchurch, the youngest of the six children of Thomas and Mary Pooley. Thomas was a labourer
Emma married John Davis, a labourer, in St Mary’s, Northchurch 22 November 1863. Both signed the register with an X.
The couple were to have five sons and three daughters: Thomas (1864), Edwin (1866), Ephraim (1869), Hephzibah (1871), Annie (1875), Esther (1879), Alfred (1882) and John (1883).
In 1871 Emma, John and the three oldest boys were living in Northchurch High Street. Emma was supplementing their income by straw plaiting. They were still there in 1881. Thomas and Edwin, like their father, were labourers and the next three oldest were at school.
John died in 1888 aged 46 and by April 1891 Emma was living with her oldest son Thomas, a sawyer, his wife Sarah and their three young children in High Street, Northchurch. Her youngest children – Annie, Esther, Alfred and John – were also living with them, although oddly they are described as Thomas’s nephews and nieces. Emma was described as living “on her own means”, although it seems unlikely that John was able to leave her very much.
31 March 1901 she was living at 7, Red Lion Yard with her sons Alfred, aged 19, a groom, and John, aged 18, a general labourer.
Emma died June 1901 aged 62 and was buried 8 June.
