Rectory Lane Cemetery, Berkhamsted

Biography:
Emma Spicer
1833 –1909

Unmarked grave Emma Spicer (1833-1901)

Emma was born in 1833 in Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire, to Daniel and Ann Simmonds. Her father was an agricultural labourer and in 1841 they lived at Clipper Down, Ivinghoe.

Like many women from labouring families she became a straw plaiter, producing plait for the Luton and Dunstable hat industry.

Emma married Jesse John Spicer, a carpenter, in Berkhamsted in early 1861 and their daughter Ann was born in March that year in Orchard End, Northchurch.

In April 1871 the family was living in Castle Street where, sadly, Ann died, aged only 13, in 1874. She is buried in this cemetery.

The couple’s fortunes seem to have taken a turn for the worse and in 1881 they were living in the very poor conditions of Red Lion Yard, off the High Street. In 1891 they were in Mill Street and Jesse was a general labourer. By 1901 they were back at 20, Red Lion Yard.

Jesse died at 1, Red Lion Yard in November 1903 aged 64. He is buried in this cemetery.

Emma died in April 1909 aged 75 in Red Lion Yard.
