Unmarked grave Ernest James Pitkin (1911-1965)

Ernest was born 17 August 1911 in Berkhamsted to Walter and Edith Mary (née Ward) Pitkin. His father was a law clerk.

In 1921 the family lived at 10, Clarence Road.

In May 1933 Ernest must have been in his father’s black books after leaving the family car parked in Elm Grove. Either the brakes had failed, or he hadn’t applied them properly, and the car ran backwards, across the road and crashed into the window of H C Ward, drapers. (Now M&Co.) Incredibly there was no collision with other vehicles and nobody was injured. The care was “slightly damaged”.

Ernest married Sylvia Margaret Timson in early 1936 in Reading and their son John was born 23 July that year.

In 1939 they lived at 66, Greenway West, Berkhamsted. Ernest was a greengrocer’s salesman,

Ernest died in West Herts hospital 19 February 1965. His home address was 301, High Street.
