Plot 1110 Ernest Tompkins (1870-1942)
Ernest was born 9 July 1870 Berkhamsted to butcher Charles Tompkins and his wife Kate Emily (née Clarke).
In 1881 he was living with his parents and four sisters in the High Street. His father was a butcher and cow keeper.
In 1891 he was living with parents and two sisters at 157, High Street, where he was to remain for the rest of his life.
He never married and became a butcher, working with his father and, from 1907 when his father died and his mother continued with the business, with her.
In 1911 he was living with his mother and unmarried sister Alice. He was an assistant butcher.
In 1921 he was described in the census as “butcher’s manager”. When his mother died in 1922 Ernest took over the business.
In 1939 he was described as a master butcher, still living with sister Alice.
Ernest died 29 September 1942. His sister Alice died in 1949 and is buried with him here.
Both parents are buried in plot 674.
