Plot 1057 Ernie (Ernest Herbert Hewitt) Astrand (1906-1920)

Ernie was born in 1906 in Balham, the son of William Ernest and Elizabeth Ann Astrand (née Hewitt). He was baptised on 22 April that year at St Mary’s, Balham. At the time his half-Finnish father was working as a porter for the London, Brighton and South Coast railway company.

The family moved to Mortlake, where his brother Frederick was born in 1908. In the 1911 census they were shown at 6, Spencer Cottages, Christchurch Road, Mortlake and his father was then working as a hotel waiter. His sister Violet Isabel was born in 1914 at 13, Thornton Road East Sheen.

Ernie died in mid-1920 aged only 14, and was buried in the London area. He is commemorated on the gravestone here with his parents who had moved to Berkhamsted at some point between 1921 and 1928.
